At Bartholomew Gallery, we have an

expanded view on maintaining artwork. When

someone purchases an oil painting from us, or

any other gallery, there are certain upkeep tasks

that need to be preformed in order to maintain the

integrity and visual appeal of the piece. After one

year, all paintings should be re-varnished, and

canvases tightened if necessary. This will ensure

many years of maintenance free enjoyment. After

60-75 years, the painting will need to be cleaned. If the

painting has hung in areas of major tobacco use or

close to a kitchen or bathroom, the condition of the

painting should be closely monitored for humidity and

other air born contamination. We recommend

cleaning and inspection in these areas every 5-10 years,

depending on the severity of the conditions. For all of
