"My focus is on painting as a

process—on pushing the media of paint

on canvas in new ways,

toward new edges. I paint the

landscape because it offers a

common ground where

people can relate to my work

while I'm afforded the freedom to

challenge the boundaries of the

paint. I seek out landscapes with strong

compositional attributes that

speak for themselves

despite my focus

on technique."

"My pieces emerge from an intensely

personal relationship with place and

atmosphere, and from on-site

thumbnails. They reflect my

interpretation of the West, my passion for

space and simplicity, and a sensitive,

subtle use of a tonal

palette. I prefer style over detail,

utilizing tones, nuances of color, and

planes of space, with simplicity and

in a way that expresses my

feelings toward nature."

Raised in western Colorado,

Kelly took an interest in western

art at an early age. He loves

the old west and spends

the time needed in research to

ensure authenticity in his work. Oil,

watercolor, pencil, and bronze

are the mediums that Kelly

chooses to work in. Kelly is

also an accomplished

mural and sign artist.
